What is NLP?

"The study of subjective experience"

NLP Stands for Neurolinguistics. The nervous system - the mind and the sensory organs with which we receive and filter information through our five senses. Linguistic the way we communicate and interpret experience through language, including body language, images, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells as well as words. Programming the way we construct personal 'programs' (similar in some ways to computer programs) of thought, communication and behaviour

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how we think and communicate, with ourselves and with others, and of how we can use this to get the results we want.

The heart of NLP is modelling successful behaviour - the techniques which are commonly thought of as making up NLP are just the results of that modelling, i.e., if you where going to run a marathon who would you ask, someone who has never run a marathon or someone who has? For advice on nutrition, pacing yourself, training methods etc. You would be more likely to model the person who has run the marathon effectively.

Can NLP change your life?

I think NLP has the potential to alter someone’s perspective, and by altering their perspective it can change their life. The techniques and strategies are very powerful. NLP certainly changed my life. And I have been fortunate in my role as trainer and coach to help many others find their path, and get out of helpless situations.

How does body language play a role in NLP?

It has been scientifically estimated around 58 percent of what we communicate is through body language. We can not - not communicate, we are always communicating on some level, verbally and or non-verbally, we are always sending non verbal signals to people we interact with. Whether its your family, partner, boss, local shopkeeper, much of what we communicate with everyone we interact with is non verbal.

One of NLPs main emphasis is on communicating effectively, if much of what we communicate is through our body language, then in order to understand people, and gain rapport, Body Language is crucial.

With NLP Rapport and Body Language you are able to relate better to people and create faster and stronger relationships, for example by matching and mirroring, you can enter someone’s world, and by doing that they will feel more comfortable.

Also sensory acuity reading someone’s non verbal signals is crucial to understand the other person’s state of mind. NLP is about relating to the other persons map of the world, understanding the other person’s reality. The best way to do that is through understanding non-verbal signals and body language.

If you could offer one tip on how to succeed in business, what would it be?

Be very clear about your outcome, know exactly what you want.

Who inspired you to take up a career in NLP?

My brother was reading one of Tony Robbins books in the early 90s I picked up the book and the rest was history as they say. I saw one of his seminars in Sydney in the early 90s, and went to a few of his other seminars thereafter including reading his books, listening to his audios and watching his dvds and it gave me the desire to learn more.

Wyatt Woodsmall was also an important part of my learning and development, in particular just how important modelling behaviour was and how to do it, there are several other people also, though Robbins and Woodsmall were most influential in my development.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2012?

It’s a fairly busy rest of the year, I will be going back on tour around the world later in the year, though prior to that, I am running seminars In Manchester and London. I am delivering NLP Courses, and also working with some exciting businesses, sports teams, and athletes. I am releasing a new book later in the year. And looking forward to getting back into radio broadcasting.
